The Driving Theory Test

The theory test is made up of two parts; the question & answer part and the hazard perception part.  You will need to pass both parts to pass the theory test. You cannot book a practical test until you have passed the theory test.

PART ONE – multiple choice questions

Before starting the test you will be given instructions on how the test works.
You can proceed with a practice session of the questions to get used to the layout of the test if necessary. Once the real test starts, a question and three to four possible answer will appear. You will have to select the correct answer by touching the screen. Some questions will need more than one answer.

You will be asked 50 questions in 57 minutes and to pass you will need to score at least 43 out of 50.

You can flag questions that you are not sure about and then come back to them later in the test. After finishing the questions, you can choose to have a break of up to 3 minutes before starting the hazard perception.

PART TWO – hazard perception

The hazard perception begins with a short tutorial video clip explaining about how the hazard perception part works. The hazard perception part is also delivered on a computer, but you will respond by clicking on the mouse.

The hazard perception part is made up of approximately 14 one minute video clips which feature every day road scenes.  In each clip there will be ay least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards.

To achieve a high score you will need to respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its development. The earlier you spot the hazard the more points you score. The maximum you can score on each hazard is five points

At the end of the test you will then be given your result by the test centre staff

DOCUMENTS NEEDED TO TAKE YOUR THEORY TEST

You will need to take both parts of your valid driving license (the photo card and the paper counterpart) to the test centre. If you have an old style license, you must also bring a valid passport. If you don’t show the correct documents you will not be able to sit the test and you will lose your fee.

Make sure you are at the test centre 15 minutes early than your appointment time.
